General Care Before Surgery

Smoking negatively alters the arterial circulation of the skin. Patients who smoke have a high risk of presenting complications such as skin suffering and scarring problems. Ideally, the patient should not be a smoker and if he/she is a smoker, he/she should stop smoking at least two weeks before and two weeks after the surgery to reduce the risk of these complications. There are medications that increase the risk of bleeding such as: Alka Seltzer, Aspirin, Warfarin, Ibuprofen, Dristan, Naproxen, Vitamin E or Ginkgo Biloba. You should notify your surgeon if you are taking any of these medications (or any other medications) before scheduling surgery.

Liposuction- Liposculpture

The liposuction or liposculpture is a procedure in which fat is extracted to mold the body through very small incisions (half a centimeter) strategically located. It is one of the most frequently performed procedures by plastic surgeons worldwide. It can be combined with different technologies such as laser, Vasser or J plasma to optimize results and improve skin retraction. Currently, high-definition liposuction and abdominal marking are performed to define and give a more athletic appearance to patients.

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia in operating rooms. The average time of incapacity depends directly on the surgery but is about 1-week, normal activities including gym can be resumed at 2 or 3 weeks depending on how the patient feels.

Tummy tuck/ Abdominoplasty/ Abdominal lipectomy

Abdominoplasty is the procedure by which the abdomen is molded by removing the excess of fat and skin. An incision is made that is hidden in the bikini line, the skin is resected and the abdominal muscles are tied to obtain a flat abdomen and provide waist, finally the belly button is repositioned hiding the scar. Candidates for this procedure are usually patients who have had pregnancies or patients who have a significant excess of skin or poor quality with the presence of stretch marks. This procedure is usually accompanied by liposuction for better results.

Breast Augmentation (Implants)

Augmentation mammoplasty is one of the most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons in which the volume is increased and the shape of the breasts is improved.  Currently, cohesive silicone implants are used as they are safer and more durable, as all medical devices may require replacement later. Breast augmentation is usually done through the areola or the inframammary fold leaving a hidden scar, the implant can be placed above or below the muscle depending on the characteristics of the breasts of each patient. Breast implant surgery does not prevent breast feeding. In selected cases, breast augmentation with fat can be performed. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in the operating room and the time of incapacity is about 1 week.

Mammary fat transfer

Autologous fat transfer is a process in which fat is removed from one area of the body such as the abdomen, aspirated through cannulas and injected into another site for example to increase breast size.

Breast reduction mammoplasty

Breast reduction not only creates aesthetically attractive breasts, but in many cases alleviates the discomfort that excessively large breasts can cause, such as back and neck pain.  With this procedure, the breasts are reduced in size, given a rounded and projected shape, and the areolas are reduced in size if necessary. In most cases, this surgery does not alter nipple sensation or the ability to breastfeed later. The resulting scar is vertical or inverted T-shaped depending on the size of the breasts, usually in the term of a year are seen as a few more stretch marks on the breasts.  It is a procedure that is performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 3-4 hours. The time of incapacity is 1 week, you can start exercising after 4 weeks.

Mamopexy/ breast lift

The mastopexy or breast lift is performed on patients with breast ptosis (sagging breasts) and consists of resecting excess skin and rearranging the tissues.  The objective of this procedure is to lift the breasts to give them a more attractive shape (round and projected), relocate the areolas and decrease their size if necessary. Different types of approaches and scars can be used such as periareolar, vertical, anchor or inverted T according to the characteristics of the breasts.  It can be combined with the use of silicone implants to give a greater volume to the breasts.

BBL (Brazilian Butt lift) / buttock fat transfer /Gluteal Lipoinjection

Gluteal lipoinjection is performed in combination with liposuction, in which a body contouring is performed, including the region around the buttocks where the extracted fat is injected to give greater projection and harmony. It is an excellent method in which the patient’s own tissue is used to achieve the objective and in that way the result is natural, effective, and long lasting. When the patient is very thin and does not have enough fat, it is possible to increase the size of the gluteus with silicone implants. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia in operating rooms.

Gluteoplasty (gluteal implants)

It is the technique of buttock augmentation using silicone implants. Thin patients who do not have enough fat for buttock augmentation are candidates for this technique. A small 4 cm incision is made between the intergluteal fold (between the two buttocks). It is dissected down to the muscle and an intramuscular pocket is formed on each side and the silicone prosthesis is placed.

Calf Augmentation

The size of the calves can be increased using silicone prostheses. This procedure does not alter the normal functioning of the leg and has a high degree of patient satisfaction. The procedure is performed through a small 4 cm incision in the crease of the knee at the back of the leg.  The silicone prosthesis is inserted through this incision and placed over the calf in the area to be augmented.  The size of the prosthesis varies according to the characteristics and needs of the patient.

Arm surgery, Brachioplasty

The reduction of the arm size can be performed with liposuction or by performing a brachioplasty when resection of excess skin is required. Patients with a history of obesity who have lost significant amounts of weight and are left with redundant skin on the arms and patients with age-related loss of skin elasticity are candidates for this surgery. The brachioplasty scar is a line on the inside of the arm or in the armpit and its length depends on the excess skin present.

Cruroplasty / Thigh Surgery

Thigh reduction and lifting can be performed with liposuction or by cruroplasty when excess skin needs to be resected. In cases of excess fat only, liposuction provides very satisfactory results.  In patients with significant skin excess, skin resection is necessary. The scars can be hidden in the groin or inner thigh and the approximate time of disability is 10 days.

Reconstructive Surgery

Post- bariatric Reconstructive Surgery

Many patients with obesity are taken to bariatric surgery (Gastric sleeve or bypass) or undergo medical treatment which results in significant weight loss and leads to laxity and excess skin on the face, neck, arms, breasts, abdomen, back, buttocks and thighs.  Surgery corrects the presence of this excess skin by using different surgical techniques. All surgeries may be indicated but will not be performed at the same time. The order of these surgeries depends on the patient and their priorities.

Biopolymer removal

Biopolymer disease or iatrogenic allogenesis are foreign bodies that enter the body (industrial silicone, mineral oil, etc.) mainly in the buttocks, breasts, and lips, generally for cosmetic purposes and performed by unscrupulous people who are not plastic surgeons.

Over time, these substances cause problems such as changes in skin color, abscesses, pain, migration and can sometimes develop the disease known as ASIA syndrome (Adjuvant Induced Autoimmune Syndrome), which consists of an autoimmune or inflammatory reaction that It is characterized by a debilitating disease with general symptoms such as weight loss, hair loss, fever, joint pain, and elevation of acute phase reactants.

The removal of biopolymers is a surgery that seeks to extract the greatest amount of these substances to control the disease, giving a better quality of life to patients without altering the aesthetics of their body.

Facial Surgery

Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery

With the normal aging process and the loss of elasticity of the tissues of the orbit, excess skin and fat may appear in the upper and lower eyelids, in addition to a lowering of the eyebrows and the appearance of bags, which produces an expression of tiredness and a puffy and sad look.  In some patients the excess skin can produce alteration of the visual field.

Blepharoplasty is a procedure in which incisions are made in natural folds and manages to restore a youthful look, repositioning the tissues and removing excess skin and fat.  Blepharoplasty is a procedure that can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the characteristics and conditions of each patient. The surgery time is approximately 2 hours, and the incapacity is approximately one week.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia, closed and open approaches can be performed with scars that are hidden inside or at the base of the nose depending on the modifications that need to be made. In the postoperative period, swelling, bruising and numbness may occur, which resolve in the first few days. A plaster splint or adhesive tapes can be placed during the first weeks to control the inflammation and after five to seven days the stitches are removed, and the patient can resume normal activities around the second week with the indications given by the plastic surgeon. The surgery time is approximately 1 to 4 hours.

Rhinoplasty / Nose Surgery

The nose is a unique and irreplaceable structure that allows harmonizing and giving identity to each face. Its complex anatomy and function require an extensive knowledge of it, in order to optimize and give the best aesthetic results without altering the respiratory function. To perform a rhinoplasty, it is necessary a careful planning of the procedure that considers the expectations and particularities of each patient such as the type of skin, the width of the nose, the presence of humps, the position of the septum, the history of previous traumas and fractures and their relationship with the other structures of the face to obtain the best results.

Facial rejuvenation, Rhytidoplasty

As the years pass, changes can occur in the face such as loss of elasticity of tissues, wrinkles, lowering of the eyebrows, increase in the skin of the eyelids, formation of bags and dark circles, loss of volume in the cheeks and the marking of furrows, which causes an aged appearance. Rhytidoplasty or facelift is a surgery that allows, through hidden scars in natural folds, remove excess skin and wrinkles, reposition tissues and define the youthful appearance to the face.

Ear surgery/ otoplasty

Ears are unique structures with multiple anatomical features that allow them to have a normal appearance. However, changes in projection, size and shape can produce drastic changes in the appearance of the face, which leads the patient to try to hide them. It is considered that the ears reach 90% of their size at the age of 8 years, so after this age can be considered the realization of this procedure.

Otoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia. It is a procedure that seeks through the carving and manipulation of the skin and cartilage to return to the ear a proper appearance.  Incisions are made in the back of the ear, where the scars are hidden, and the surgery time is approximately 1 hr.
